Samara Private Game Reserve is situated in the malaria-free Eastern Cape where time stands still inviting you to pause, breathe, reflect.
It is the haunting beauty of this fragile area that first inspired Samara’s campaign of rehabilitation and renewal. Since 1997 their main objective has been to realise the land’s full potential, not only as an area of outstanding natural diversity – this vast area includes four of South Africa’s seven biomes – but also as home to an ambitious programme of game reintroduction especially that of the highly endangered cheetah, into its natural habitat.
The luxurious Manor House is one of only two lodges situated on the award-winning 27,000-hectare Samara Private Game Reserve in the Great Karoo – a Big Five safari with a difference.
The Manor is a striking yet understated villa, unique in its warm design reflecting local landscapes and traditions with a light, modern twist. Upon arrival your eye is drawn through the glass double doors flanked by beaded African artwork and traditional Karoo antiques to the breathtaking views beyond. The scenic mountain landscape unfolds over a 21m infinity pool descending to a waterhole. Unwind by the fireplace where a crackling fire burns in the winter months and the large glass doors to the patio are cast open wide in summer.
The Manor comprises 4 luxury suites, each with a shower, free-standing bath and private patio with outdoor seating. The suites can be booked independently or the entire villa can be taken over on an exclusive-use basis. This option is popular with families and groups looking for privacy, indulgence and complete relaxation.
Surrounded by a natural amphitheatre of mountains, Karoo Lodge sits in perfect serenity within Samara Private Game Reserve’s 27,000 hectares of pristine wilderness. Combining colonial comforts and modern luxuries with a rustic and welcoming feel, Karoo Lodge is the perfect place to relax and allow the tranquillity of the Karoo to envelop you – on the wide verandah in summer or by the cosy fire in winter.
With nine double rooms of varying sizes, Karoo Lodge caters for individual travellers, couples and families. It can also be booked on an exclusive-use basis for up to 18 guests.
Within the homestead, Karoo Lodge offers a warm and inviting living room with a fireplace as well as a cosy bar area. There is a small TV area off the bar. Antiques, family heirlooms and vintage books permeate the décor throughout. A large dining room with fireplace is used for indoor crystal dinners. When the weather is clement, candlelit dinners are set up on the verandah, on the lawn under the stars, or in the boma, a traditional reed enclosure warmed by a roaring fire. The pool is fenced off from the spacious main lawn and has a covered gazebo area for warm summer evenings.
